Richard and Jane Manoogian Art Gallery

The Richard and Jane Manoogian Art Gallery is a fine art exhibition space, created to provide high-quality visual arts experiences. It will debut the private collection of Richard and Jane Manoogian.

The couple began collecting American art seriously in the 1970s after Richard became a trustee of the Detroit Institute of Arts. His business interests regularly took him to New York and other major cities where he would steal an hour or two away from meetings to visit museums and galleries, often making a special trip to see just a single work of art.

Richard and Jane have a deep love for the country and a particular appreciation for the period in which the country grew and expanded. This resulted in a passion for collecting nineteenth and early twentieth century American art, especially works from the Hudson River School, Impressionism, Genre, Trompe L’Oeil and the Ashcan School.

Over the five decades since the collection began the couple have shared their full collection extensively throughout Japan, Europe and the United States and lent individual works to small and large museums. It has been their shared passion and goal to enhance and expand the wonder of American Art to as many people possible.

The Schaap Center has several paintings from the Manoogian collection on display, including

  • The Reliance – The Home Run
  • Cakes, Wine, and Fruit
  • Birches in Autumn
  • Impressionist Landscape
  • Portrait of Beatrice
  • Political Joyride
